Auckland is built on an isthmus between the Waitemata Harbor on the Pacific Ocean and Manukau Harbor on the Tasman Sea. Europeans settled Auckland in 1840 and made it New Zealand’s capital until Wellington replaced it in 1865. Maori have lived in the area since the 14th century. It has the largest ethnic Polynesian population in the world.
